  • 1998-­99: Working in the Spanish Commercial Office in Istanbul (Turkey) for the Spanish Foreign Trade Institute (ICEX): promote business cooperation of Spanish companies in Turkey and analysis of the economic context and tendencies of Turkey and surrounding economies.

 

  • 2001-­2008: Responsible for the Middle East and North African markets at the Consortium for Foreign Trade Promotion of Catalonia (COPCA), of the Ministry of Innovation, Universities and Enterprise of Catalonia. Direct responsibility on the offices in Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Iran with operations in several other countries of the region.

-         Promotion of business cooperation between Catalan and local enterprises from these countries.

-         Reporting on the economic and business situation of the region for Catalan economic and politic institutions.

-         Organization and management of economic and institutional delegations from Catalonian authorities to these countries.

-         ­Participation as market expert on the economy and business environments of the MENA region in international business cooperation programs:

-         ­European Commission TEP-­A Program in Egypt (2006/­7)

-         Inter-American Development Bank: Argentinean project (2005/­6) and Uruguay project (2005).

 

  • 2008-2017: Director of the Socioeconomic Development Department at the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed), think tank and research centre specialized in the Mediterranean region, being a public consortium of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain, the Government of Catalonia and the Municipality of Barcelona.

 

-         Analysing and reporting on the socioeconomic and business situation of the countries of the region as well as the growing economic involvement of external powers.

 -         Defining and managing multidisciplinary international high level working groups on relevant topics for the region such as:

  • Financial reform: mobile banking, banking reform and private equity.
  • Emerging business opportunities and tendencies in the main markets of the Mediterranean and Middle East region.
  • Public Administration reform: decentralization, independence and professionalization.
  • Urban agenda and management: PPP, involvement of international finance institutions on urban development.
  • Potential development of the stock exchange market in North Africa.
  • Analysis of the economic transitions in the region and the reforms to be implemented.
  • How to promote entrepreneurship and innovation in the Mediterranean countries.
  • Information and communication technologies as factors of development and inclusion.
  • Citizen’s driven innovation dynamics and schemes that are arising as drivers of innovation and creativity such as Living Labs, Fablabs...

 

April 2013: Evaluator for the Research Executive Agency (REA) of the European Commission of the research proposals on Mediterranean issues for the 7 Framework Program.

  • October 2015: Report for the European League for Economic Cooperation (ELEC- LECE) on ‘Entrepreneurship by Immigrant Women: Milan, Barcelona, Istanbul

 

  • Since 2015: Member of the Steering Committee of the ‘BCN International Policy Sector Action Planaiming to transform Barcelona into a global centre of reference in international public policy.

 

  • September 2016: Founder and partner of ‘Barcelona Halal Services’, a consulting company specialized in the Halal business opportunities emerging in the Muslim world.

 

  • September 2017 – June 2018: Coordinator of the Halal Project for Alimentaria 2018 (Organizer of the Second International Halal Congress, organization of international specialized trade missions, showcookings, contact with international media…)

 

  • Since September 2017: Consultant, specialized cross-cultural management and business culture in Muslim environments.

 

  • 2018 member of WOCMES Advisory Scientific Committee for the 5th Edition of WOCMES (World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies), Seville from July 16-20th 2018.
  • September – November 2018: Coordinator of the ‘Mediterranean Innovation and Digital Transformation Summit’ in the framework of the ’12th  Mediterranean Week of Economic Leaders’ of Barcelona of ASCAME
  • 2018-19: Consultant of the SWITCHMED Project implemented in 8 Mediterranean countries. It is a project run by UNIDO, UN Environment-MAP/SCP-RAC, UN Environment Economy Division, and DG NEAR on behalf of the European Union.
  • Since November 2015: organizer of the International Halal Congresses and coordinator of the Halal events at Alimentaria Exhibition

 

 Participation in International Euro-Mediterranean Project:

 

  • ‘Mediterranean Prospective 2030’ (MEDPRO 2030) with 20 euro-Mediterranean research centres (April 2010 – March 2013); Analysis of the main scenarios in the region for 2030 on key variables such as demography, food security, economic development or energy, among others.

 

  • Sharing KnowledgE Assets: InteRegionally Cohesive NeigHborhoods’ (SEARCH), with 17 Euromediterranean research centres (2011-2014); Comparative analysis between South and Eastern neighbourhood countries on human capital, mobility, investment and location choices and institutional environment.

 

  • ‘EU-Turkey Global Business Bridge’; together with TEPAV, Turkish leading economic research centre, elaboration of a study regarding the feasibility and benchmark of the viability of economic and business cooperation among European, Turkish and businessmen from Egypt, Tunis and Palestine (2012)
